Tartan Fashion

Feb 17, 2009

Since the Victorian and Edwardian eras, tartan had been featured in fashion catalogues. By then, tartan shifted from being mainly a part of men's clothing to become an significant part of women's fashion.

Tartan developed an air of dignity and exclusivity, as an effect of its connection with the British aristocracy. Because of this, tartan has made reappearances in the world of fashion several times.

In the late 1970s tartan was resurgenced as a means for the British Isles youth to voice their dissatisfaction with the ruling class. The unconventional use of tartan, which had long been linked with authority and gentility, was then seen as the expression against modern society. In this way tartan became an anti-establishment symbol.
